Role Overview

The Vice President of Upstate SORBA serves as a key leadership partner to the President and Board of Directors — helping guide the organization’s mission to build, maintain, and advocate for sustainable mountain bike trails across the Upstate of South Carolina.

This volunteer leadership position focuses on organizational support, coordination, and leadership continuity, ensuring smooth operations and strong communication between board members, volunteers, and community partners. The Vice President embodies and promotes the organization’s core values: Dig. Ride. Respect.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Support

• Assist the President in leading the Board of Directors and advancing the organization’s goals.

• Serve as acting President when the President is unavailable or as delegated.

• Provide guidance and support to coordinators and committees to ensure collaboration across areas such as trails, events, membership, and communications.

• Help identify and develop new leaders within the volunteer base, fostering long-term organizational sustainability.

Organizational Coordination

• Help maintain alignment among board initiatives, ensuring effective communication and project follow-through.

• Support board meeting preparation, agenda development, and follow-up on action items.

• Oversee special projects or initiatives that cross multiple program areas (e.g., partnership development, strategic planning efforts, or annual goals).

Community & Partnership Engagement

• Represent Upstate SORBA alongside the President in meetings with community partners, sponsors, land managers, and public agencies.

• Help nurture relationships that strengthen the organization’s visibility and advocacy reach.

• Participate in regional and statewide SORBA meetings when appropriate, supporting the chapter’s presence and voice within the broader network.

Volunteer Support & Development

• Collaborate with other board members to recruit, orient, and support new volunteers and committee leaders.

• Promote teamwork, recognition, and a positive volunteer culture across the organization.

• Step in to assist other coordinators (Events, Group Rides, Membership, etc.) when additional leadership or hands-on help is needed.

Strategic Planning & Oversight

• Work with the President and board to implement the organization’s strategic priorities and annual goals.

• Support monitoring of progress, ensuring accountability and momentum for ongoing projects.

• Help evaluate programs and identify opportunities for growth or improvement.

Role Overview

As Group Rides Coordinator for Upstate SORBA, you’ll help connect local riders to the trails, community, and mission that make mountain biking thrive in the Upstate. This volunteer leadership role organizes and promotes group rides that are welcoming, safe, and aligned with our core values — Dig. Ride. Respect.

You’ll work closely with board members, ride leaders, and volunteers to build community, strengthen engagement, and encourage participation in trail work, membership, and events.

Key Responsibilities

Ride Planning & Coordination

• Schedule and coordinate regular group rides for various skill levels across Upstate SORBA-supported trails (e.g., Paris Mountain, Pleasant Ridge, Lakeside, Saluda Confluence, Conestee, etc).

• Recruit, brief, and support volunteer ride leaders and sweepers.

• Ensure rides follow safety, land-use, and environmental best practices.

Community Engagement

• Welcome new riders and help connect them to SORBA membership, volunteer opportunities, and trail projects.

• Promote inclusivity and fun — making rides a gateway for riders to become active trail stewards.

• Capture feedback to improve the ride experience and grow participation.

Communications & Promotion

• Collaborate with the Communications Coordinator to promote rides on Facebook, Instagram, email, and UpstateSORBA.com.

• Keep the ride calendar updated and ensure last-minute changes (like weather cancellations) are communicated promptly.

• Share ride photos, stories, and milestones to highlight community spirit.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure ride leaders understand group-ride etiquette, emergency protocols, and trail rules.

• Maintain incident reporting procedures and coordinate with local land managers when necessary.

• Encourage riders to model SORBA’s “Ride Responsibly” and “Respect the Trails” ethos.

Partnership & Event Support

• Coordinate with event organizers for special ride events, “ride and dig” days, or fundraising rides.

• Represent Upstate SORBA at partner rides or local recreation events when appropriate.

• Identify and recruit volunteers for trail workdays, events, group rides, and other initiatives.

• Maintain a volunteer database with contact information, skills, and participation history.

• Onboard new volunteers with orientation, safety guidelines, and clear expectations through communications.

• Promote volunteer opportunities via social media, newsletters, and community partners.

Volunteer Coordination & Scheduling

• Schedule volunteers for trail workdays, events, and other activities.

• Communicate expectations, logistics, and any updates to assigned volunteers.

• Coordinate with Trail Crew Leads, Group Rides Coordinator, Events Coordinator, and other program leaders to align volunteer staffing needs.

• Ensure volunteers have the tools, materials, and guidance needed to succeed.

Volunteer Engagement & Recognition

• Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and positive volunteer environment.

• Encourage repeat participation and long-term commitment.

• Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through social media, newsletters, events, or awards.

• Collect volunteer feedback to improve experiences and processes.

Tracking & Reporting

• Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours, participation, and impact.

• Provide regular reports to the board and coordinators on volunteer trends, needs, and achievements.

The Trail Crew Lead is a hands-on volunteer leadership position within Upstate SORBA, supporting the mission to build, maintain, and advocate for sustainable mountain bike trails in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Trail Crew Leads supervise small volunteer crews during trail workdays, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with SORBA and land manager best practices. They are critical to turning the organization’s trail maintenance plans into tangible results on the ground.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Crew Leadership

• Lead small groups of volunteers during trail workdays, ensuring all participants are productive, safe, and engaged.

• Provide clear instructions on tasks such as trail building, erosion control, signage, and general maintenance.

• Motivate and support volunteers of all skill levels, encouraging teamwork and camaraderie.

• Monitor safety practices, ensuring proper use of tools, equipment, and protective gear.

Trail Maintenance & Construction

• Assist the Trail Coordinator in executing trail work plans.

• Follow sustainable trail design and maintenance practices as defined by SORBA/land manager guidelines.

• Help identify trail issues, erosion, or hazards and report back to the Trail Coordinator/board.

• Participate in hands-on trail building, clearing, and maintenance as needed.

Communication & Coordination

• Serve as a liaison between volunteers and the Trail Coordinator/board, relaying feedback, questions, or observations from the workday.

• Help track volunteer participation and hours for reporting and recognition purposes.

• Collaborate with other Crew Leads to ensure consistency in work practices and volunteer engagement.

Volunteer Engagement & Safety

• Foster an inclusive, positive, and welcoming environment for all volunteers.

• Model safe trail work habits and educate volunteers on proper techniques.

• Help recognize volunteer contributions and encourage repeat participation.

• Willingness to be certified in Wilderness First Aid & CPR.

• Willingness to be certified for USFS chainsaw certifications.

At-Large Board Members serve as versatile leaders within Upstate SORBA, supporting the organization’s mission, governance, and programs. They bring diverse perspectives, assist with special projects, and provide critical input to board discussions and decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Participate in board meetings, discussions, and decision-making.

• Support organizational priorities such as trail stewardship, advocacy, events, or community engagement.

• Assist with at least one committee or initiative (e.g., events, communications, membership, fundraising).

• Act as an ambassador for Upstate SORBA in the community.

• Contribute to strategic planning and organizational development.

• Support volunteer engagement and outreach as needed.
